How to Check Your Transmission Fluid

1. Locate the Transmission Dipstick
- Heavy vehicle dipsticks can be located near the transmission or can be located near the passenger side engine bay area.
2. Check Fluid Levels
- Start your vehicle and let it warm up to operating temperature.
- Ensure the truck is parked on level ground and shift through all gears before returning to neutral or park.
- Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it, and pull it out again to check the fluid level.
- The fluid should be within the recommended range indicated on the dipstick.
- If your vehicle is equipped with an oil level sensor, you can access the oil level through the push button shift selector
To enter the fluid level function:
1. Park the vehicle on a level surface, shift to N (NEUTRAL) and apply the parking brake.
2. Using a pushbutton shift selector, simultaneously press the UP and DOWN arrows one time. For a bump level shift selector, press the DIAGNOSTICS button one time.
3. The fluid level reading will be delayed until the following conditions are met
- Engine must be at idle
- Transmission is in N (NEUTRAL)
- Output speed must be zero
- Fluid temperature must be between 104F (40C) and 220F (104C)
- Vehicle has been stationary for two minutes to allow the fluid to settle
4. The shift selector displays the fluid level data as follows:
- CORRECT FLUID LEVEL- The fluid is within the correct fluid level zone when OK is shown
- LOW FLUID LEVEL- The display shows the number of quarts the transmission fluid is low
- HIGH FLUID LEVEL- The display shows the number of quarts the transmission fluid is overfilled
3. Inspect Fluid Condition
- Healthy transmission fluid is clear to reddish-pink with a slightly sweet smell.
- Black fluid with a burnt odour indicates contamination or overheating.
- If the fluid appears cloudy or milky, it may be contaminated with coolant, requiring immediate attention.
When to Replace Transmission Fluid
Transmission fluid doesn’t last forever and should be replaced at manufacturer-recommended intervals. Here are some general guidelines:
- Heavy-duty trucks & industrial vehicles: Change every 50,000 to 100,000 km, depending on load and driving conditions.
- Severe conditions (towing, stop-and-go traffic, extreme temperatures): More frequent changes may be required.
- If you notice slipping gears, overheating, or dirty fluid, get it changed immediately.
